John heads the Intellectual Property & Media team.

He advises on all areas of intellectual property law, including trade marks, copyright, design rights, patents, confidential information, passing off, and domain names.

John is a dual-qualified solicitor and Chartered Trade Mark Attorney.  He is particularly experienced in the protection and enforcement of brands.  He manages trade mark applications and proceedings in the UK, EU and internationally.

John has a strong track record of resolving IP disputes in a client-focused, efficient way.  He has won cases in the courts and trade mark registries, including cases in the UK courts relating to passing off, copyright, and design rights.  His recent cases include complex trade mark disputes relating to keyword advertising and comparative advertising.

Having worked in media for several years before becoming a lawyer, John takes a highly commercial ‘no fuss’ approach to solving legal problems, and always seeks to achieve the best deals for clients in their agreements and disputes.

John is a member of the Chartered Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys (CITMA) and the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI).  John has a Postgraduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Law & Practice from Oxford University.  He was awarded a distinction in Trade Marks Law & Practice from Queen Mary University, and achieved a distinction in the Professional Certificate in Trade Mark Practice.  He holds a Masters in Law with distinction from Nottingham University, and a Degree in Law from Warwick University.

Spearing Waite’s IP team is recognised as one of the leading intellectual property law teams in the East Midlands, and was recently named ‘UK Regional IP/TMT Firm of the Year’ in the prestigious ‘Legal 500 Awards 2017’.
