Close to 100 cyclists donned their padded shorts and Lycra leggings to take part in the inaugural Spearing Waite Charity Cycle Sportive around the Leicestershire and Rutland countryside on 7 June.

The event was organised by Leicester law firm Spearing Waite, with support from Tugby-based Café Ventoux.

LOROS will use the funds raised to help it continue its outstanding work caring for more than 2,500 people across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. LOROS provides free, high-quality, compassionate care and support to terminally ill adult patients, their family and carers.

The more ambitious cyclists peddled around a hilly 75-mile circuit and those wishing to go at a more sedate pace, opted for a 25-mile route.

Peter Leverett of SPACE and Lady Gretton get the Cycling Sportive underway on a tandem

The ride was started by Lady Gretton, who rode a tandem with Peter Leverett, MD of event sponsors SPACE, over the starting line to get the event moving in style.

Spearing Waite senior partner Tom Bower, who took part, said: “We had a brilliant day and the event was great on all fronts. It was superbly supported by our clients and contacts and was really sociable – plus we raised lots of cash for a fantastic charity. We are going to have to run the event again next year. It appears there are lots of cyclists who’d rather be riding their bike and networking than sat in their offices!

“I also need say a big thank you to our sponsors SPACE, RSM UK,  Mattioli Woods and  Glenway Products and I must also thank the teams from Next

and James Sellicks for their tremendous fund raising.”

John Knight, the Chief Executive of LOROS Hospice, said: “The recent Spearing Waite Cycling Sportive in support of LOROS was a great day out. The event’s success was based upon a number of factors – excellent organisation, a great starting venue at Café Ventoux, really beautiful cycling routes, well positioned feed stations and wonderfully warm weather. It was a pleasure to be involved and LOROS is grateful to everyone at Spearing Waite who made the day such a success.”

Peter Leverett, Managing Director at Leicester based retail and leisure property consultants SPACE, said: “SPACE was delighted to be involved in the LOROS Cycling Sportive organised by Spearing Waite. The East Midlands has a very strong business community and it was great to see so many of our friends, clients and industry colleagues taking part in this very worthwhile fundraiser for a fabulous charity.”

Cyclists came from across the East Midlands business and professional community.  Plaudits included:

“Thank you and well done to the whole crew for organising such a great event. I can imagine it took a lot of hard work from a lot of people to make the event a success. It was as professionally organised as any Sportive I have taken part in (and better than many!) The route was great, as was the start / finish and the fuel stops along the way.  We will be back again next year if you can take the stress of organising another one” – David Mayfield – Bygott Biggs

“A big thank you for organising the Sportive, it was a really excellent event with such attention to detail, very professional” – Stewart Collier – Mark J Rees

“All of the staff from Spearing Waite were great throughout the day and were always warm and welcoming and you are all a credit to your company.  The route and facilities provided by Café Ventoux were equally good – a challenging route but all the more worthwhile to have finished it.  The entire group cycling were all friendly and supportive along the ride and to cap it all to have booked perfect cycling weather as well, it doesn’t get much better” – Matt Parker – Parkers “the parts people”.
